For Those Who Love Cornwall
A new Facebook page has been created for those who want to keep up to date with cetacean sightings in the southwest. South West Marine Mammal Sightings is a group you can join to keep abreast of sightings and also to contribute to and add your own sightings if and when you are lucky enough to have them. We encourage members of the public to submit sightings of whales, dolphins and harbour porpoise (and seals if you wish) and to include video and/or photos if you have them submit sighting here .
We are not trying to disclose the exact location (especially of seals because they come ashore and should be left alone and not harassed by dogs etc), but we are just trying to highlight the different species that can be seen off our shores and encourage the public to keep an eye on the sea when out and about…citizen science is so important to our work. It’s because of helpful, generous members of the public that Sea Watch has the largest cetacean database in the UK. Our database is a source of valuable information to us – it allows us to take action when needed to protect wildlife. We work with and contribute to governmental decision making related to implementing new conservation action plans like Special Areas of Conservation (areas of sea which are controlled when it comes to boat traffic, fishing activities etc). With more SAC’s in place our cetaceans will be better protected for future generations.
So, if you live in the south west, or visit the area then why not follow this new group.
